Replacements for Spoiled Software

Came across an article about how the newer versions of software may not be better than previous versions, most of it caused by increasing feature sets and thus bloat. I am pretty particular about what goes on my PC as I need all the CPU power and RAM...

Other Database Drivers not provided by Microsoft

Nice post by Joseph Guadagno about database drivers not provided by Microsoft . He missed a few though, so here they are: PostgreSQL PostgreSQL needs no introductions. Probably my favourite open source DBMS. Npgsql is de facto the ADO.NET provider. Performance...

Finally: CDBurnerXP 4.0 Final

Its been three years since the public last release but now CDBurnerXP 4.0 is finally available. The official website features a spanking new design too. CDBurnerXP is a freeware CD and DVD burning software for Windows, in case anybody did not know that...

Windows Live Writer Beta 3

I am typing this on WLW Beta 3 . I wrote about the first beta, which was already very usable at the time. This is the best of breed in blogging software on Windows. Quite a lot of changes for beta 3, but the best thing for me is "Publish XHTML-style...

Classic ASP High Jinks: Windows Script 5.7

Its been a long time since I touched any classic ASP, apart from the odd quick fix to legacy projects. Anyway, I recently helped a friend out with a project, and was surprised to learn that there was an update to Windows Script, from 5.6 to 5.7. Wow!...

The Alternative To The (QuickTime) Alternative

I have been using QuickTime Alternative for a long time, but onegoodmove is crashing Firefox with the last available version of QT Alternative. And given the developers stopped any further development after Apple requested that they remove the package...

CCCP 15

CCCP 15 "Chiyo-chan's Cute Player" is released. Whoo! Lots of smashing changes which you can read about on the release thread , but for me the best thing about this is the new, custom MPC logo. Though I guess it would be pretty weird firing...

That Stupid Club is now CS 2007-rised

I've been putting this long overdue update off due to some ridiculous workloads and just plain laziness (which would explain the lack of posts too). But yes, That Stupid Club is now running on Community Server 2007 , only with the same stupid theme...

MAME Starter Guide

What is MAME? It is an emulator intended to document the hardware of arcade games systems. Of course, for most average users it is the side-effect of being able to play more than 3000 unique games that's the important thing. Well, that's all well...

Thunderbird 2.0 Released

Fantastic, been waiting for it. Features I have been looking forward to are message tagging and saved searches. What I consider the essential add-ons (Enigmail, Lightning and SmoothWheel) already work with 2.0, so no pain for me there. The look and feel...

Halite 0.29

Woo! No protocol encryption yet, being dependent on libtorrent's implementation, which I hope is underway. Can't find a changelog, but 0.29 has got to be 0.01 better than 0.28, right? Get it from the official Halite site, as usual.

Enterprise Library 3.0 Released

Most excellent. I have looked at Enterprise Library in the past, but never quite found a suitable project for it. 3.0 has just been released and the highlights (as covered by Tom Hollander) are Validation Application Block Policy Injection Application...

Goodbye Sygate, Hello Comodo

It was finally time for my beloved Sygate Personal Firewall to go. As the pipes I have access to got fatter, Sygate's CPU utilisation was getting unacceptable, up to 15% sometimes. It was also getting long in the tooth (Symantec stopped development after...

CCCP14 Released

Huzzah ! This is the 2007-02-22 "Anonymous does not forgive" build. CCCP is still the best codec pack as far as I am concerned. Coupled with the ffdshow speed ups for Vorbis and H264, this is really the only thing you need for video playback on Windows...

CS 3.0 Skinning

I was planning to go on a major skinning exercise for That Stupid Club, but seeing this , and actually reading about it, I am salivating at The Power that will be available. Eagerly waiting for the first beta... Update: link to Ben Tiedt's series of posts...
