Goodnight, Quinnware

Looks like its lights out at quinnware.com, home of QCD and QMP. I’ve still not found a suitable replacement for QMP yet and I probably was still hoping for that one last release despite the months of silence from the developer, but I guess the search is that much more urgent now.

Thanks for the years of aural pleasure.

Update 3-Jan: Happy New Year! Looks like quinnware.com is kind of back… at test.quinnware.com, with a new design to boot! Let’s hope we’ll get more news soon.

Comodo Internet Security Released

I’ve mentioned that I’m using Comodo Firewall as my software firewall solution. Version 3 was even better than version 2, with low CPU utilisation (even while engaging in heavy P2P sessions) and secure (ranked consistently near the top in the Matousec firewall tests).

And now version 3.5 (renamed the Comodo Internet Security) has been released and featuring an optional anti-virus component. I cannot speak for the efficacy of the anti-virus component, but the engine feels very light, and the definitions get three or four updates a day. If the quality of the firewall is anything to go by, the anti-virus engine is one to keep an eye on.

Best of all? Its free (as in beer).

The final build is available in the forums, but the public facing sites have not been updated yet.

Deaths March 2008

The first quarter of 2008 isn’t over yet and already two men who shaped my world have passed on.

To use what is by now a cliché, Gary Gygax failed his last saving throw on the 4th of March. Thanks Gary, for all the hours of imagination, joy and friendship your creation brought me and countless other geeks across the multiverse. I will never forget the days of “Traps? Pfft! I boot the door down.”. The Order of the Stick put it more eloquently then I ever could, so the strip shall have to speak for me.

Jeff Healey was a giant of music, and it is criminal that he is not held in higher regard by the general public. Few knew that his real love was for old American jazz or that he played the trumpet and clarinet expertly. Here he is at his incendiary best absolutely ripping it up on the title track from his debut album “See The Light” with a little help from Dr. John, Marcus Miller and Omar Hakim.

The Alternative To The (QuickTime) Alternative

I have been using QuickTime Alternative for a long time, but onegoodmove is crashing Firefox with the last available version of QT Alternative. And given the developers stopped any further development after Apple requested that they remove the package from their website, I needed an alternative.

Now, I am not keen about going back to the official QT Player, even though the developers of QT Alternative published a guide on configuring QT Player “for optimal performance and user satisfaction”.

I managed to find “QT Lite” (thanks, Google!) which is very well put together, with just the components I need. CoreAVC and CoreAAC are not longer included but that is not a huge issue.

Overall, very happy with this “update”, and Firefox is no longer crashing on onegoodmove. Thanks, whoever put this package together.

In Defence of Paris Hilton

After learning that Paris Hilton is losing her inheritance money, I couldn’t help but pen this entry in defence of the poor little rich girl

WHAT??!!?! Lose 60 million bucks over her jail term!?!?!, Uncle…now this is truly uncalled for.  What “crime” did Paris really commit?  Poor girl’s already served her time for her crime. And besides…we’ve forgiven her for her previous “crimes” what.

  • so, she did the racy FHM Shoot – Nicky was there too..hello!?! And did she get any blame? NOooo….
  • One Nite in Paris – it’s her bastard of a boyfriend who sold it. duh! Besides, its way better than the one Pam and Tommy Lee did !! (So I heard…)
  • House of Wax - ok, no excuses for her on this one.
  • ‘Stars Are Blind’ - Hey, the song was #1 in great countries like Belgium, Slovakia and Hungary, okay!?

CCCP 15

CCCP15 “Chiyo-chan’s Cute Player” is released. Whoo! Lots of smashing changes which you can read about on the release thread, but for me the best thing about this  release is the new, custom MPC Chiyo-chan logo. Though I guess it would be pretty weird firing up pornos after seeing that face…
